CLAIMS GUIDANCE RESULTING FROM VOLCANIC ASH DISRUPTION

Action you may need to take to reclaim back expenditure, Global Travel Lounge will assist all customers in following the procedure below:-

Step 1 - The base requirements needed

In order for you to pursue any claim, it is important that they can provide as much corroboratory evidence as possible. Items should include:

Detailed receipts of hotel bills and meals

Details of any communications with/instructions from the airline/operators

A detailed record of events.

Recourse Option 1 - Travel insurance company

In the first instance, it is recommended that you check the details of their travel insurance policy with their travel insurance provider to find out if those costs can be reclaimed.

Recourse Option 2 - An EU Based Airline

In the event that they are not able to reclaim the costs through their travel insurance policy, their next level of recourse is through the airline. It is important to note that all EU-based airlines are legally obliged to pay for all reasonable accommodation and meal costs.

As far as non-EU carriers are concerned, they are not legally obliged to provide a refund but it may be worth contacting the carrier’s UK office as they may be prepared to offer a refund on a locally agreed basis.

It is also worth pointing out that if you made your own way home because the carrier was unable to provide the return flight at the scheduled time, then the customer may be entitled to a refund on the return element of the journey. However, if you chose to return home ahead of the scheduled flight time (even though you expected it to be cancelled) then it will be viewed that they have broken the contract with the carrier and you will not be entitled to any form of refund.

Recourse Option 3 - The tour operator

Again, whilst the law clearly states that the tour operator is not obliged to provide the customer with a refund on expenditure incurred but if the above avenues of reclaim fail, it may be worth referring the claim to the tour operator who provided the holiday.

These conditions only apply in those instances when you completed your holiday, but if the tour operator has not been able to provide the holiday in the first instance, then you are entitled to a full refund.
